Point Reyes

I don't pass up a national seashore so we drove over to Point Reyes from Petaluma one afternoon. We stopped in the visitors center where the woman working the desk told us it was a 45 minute drive to the lighthouse and if the fog moved in we wouldn't even be able to see it because you have to go down 300 steps to get to it. So we stopped in the little town of Point Reyes Station and had coffee at the Bovine Cafe. Ok, back to Petaluma.

After further thought we decided of course we would drive out to the lighthouse. What a treat on horrible winding narrow bumpy roads. First we stopped for a nice breakfast in Point Reyes Station. Yes, oysters are on the breakfast menu.

We turned off to check out the oyster fishing. That was a gravel washboard road! The guys were just coming in with a boat load of oysters. What a dreary looking place. It was early in the day and still foggy.

We continued down the road along the beautiful rolling hills dotted with cows of every color. We had learned this is the best place for the milk to make the cheese and it is quite an industry in this area. The air is moist and the grass greener and it just makes for a better product. Years ago the land was all bought by one family and they later divided it into 26 farmstead and sold them with letters of the alphabet.

As windy and cold as it must get here it is nice to see little houses for the calves.

We could not go down to the lighthouse but we certainly could see it. I am so glad we went back out.

The lowers along the walk to the lighthouse were just amazing. I have realized you don't really need to visit gardens in this area as you seem to always be in a garden.

After we drove down one side of the bay we drove alongside the opposite side north to Bodega Bay.
