Saugatuck-Douglas, Michigan

An evening drive took us to Saugatuck and Douglas. These small villages lie on either side of the Kalamazoo River. This light greeted us as we drove into Douglas.

The SS Keewatin, built in Scotland in 1907, is one of the last of the classic steamships. It was built for the Canadian Pacific Railway's upper Great Lakes passenger route and was in service on the lakes for 57 years.

Around the bend and the boats are on Lake Michigan.

The stern-wheeler was loaded with tourists heading upstream on the Kalamazoo River. The entire town was overflowing with tourists but it was Friday night.

The chain ferry crosses the Kalamazoo River between Douglas and Saugatuck.

I felt a little sorry for the guy that has to crank the wheel to move the chain through the gears.

Although Saugatuck is known for it's art community, I found the large boats much more interesting. Check out the scooters and seadoos on the upper back deck. Yes, they had a crane on the other side to lower them to the water.

We enjoyed walking along the boardwalk, as did others, just looking at the boats that had come from Florida to Chicago.
