Little Bighorn

As we were leaving Montana we spotted the Little Bighorn National Monument named for the nearby river and famous battle that took place. It is a GEM in the AAA book so we stopped to tour. These markers represent the 7th Cavalry men who died.

After a short movie we better understood about Custer's Last Stand as we wandered out to the hill where Custer and so many of his men died. The 7th Cavalry lost five companies and 210 men. The center marker with black is Custer's.

The display inside is interesting and informative as the national park's usually are.

Finally in recent years some markers have been placed that represent the fallen Indians who numbered less than 100.

A handsome monument for the Indians has also been erected. Although the Lakota and Cheyenne won the battle in 1876 they later lost all the land they were fighting for, the Black Hills,  and were sent to reservations. That battle ended their nomadic way of life, sharing the land and following the buffalo.

After a rest and lunch in the parking lot it was off to Sheridan, Wyoming.

And, of course, our next planned stop after Sheridan is Little Big Horn. I hear there's a casino you can park at there.
