On the northern tip of the peninsula we stopped at the Grand Traverse Lighthouse which was built in 1858. It guided ships through the Manitou shipping passage and marks the entrance to Grand Traverse Bay.
A short trail led to the edge of Lake Michigan.
This apple tree provided a treat for lunch. Peach, apple, and cherry orchards are located all over this area. It is especially noted for the cherries but the peaches and apples are ripe now.
The trees look quite different in this neighborhood.
We traveled alongside the bay going southward and stopped in Northport for a picnic in the park alongside the marina.
At one point we passed this lighthouse. I did not expect to see one atop a stump!
After we left Traverse City and the peninsula we headed to Beulah for a piece of cherry pie. The Cherry Hut was listed in USA Today once as one of the 10 best places for a piece of cherry pie. On the way back to the campground we drove alongside Platte Lake, one of many little lakes in the region. I was surprised to see a tree growing on the beach!
The residents had nice beach areas across from their houses with a perfect spot for campfires and their boats on the crystal clear lake.
Rarely have I felt so welcomed to a town as Frankfort. That is a boat carving on top.
We parked on the beach and watched boats going through this harbor entrance from Lake Michigan. I waded a little but find the water a little cold to my liking. So I have yet to don my suit and make the plunge!
